From 灯台 (tōdai, “lighthouse”) + 躑躅 (tsutsuji, “rhododendron; azalea”). Over time, the tōdai became dōdan. The kanji are jukujikun (熟字訓), from Chinese 滿天星 / 满天星 (mǎntiānxīng, “baby's breath, Gypsophila paniculata”).
