Etymology

[edit]

Lua error in Module:kanjitab at line 300: The yomi type "jukujikun" is only applicable to compound character readings, so cannot apply to 清 read as すが. If this is intended as part of a jukujikun reading, please enter the whole reading as one, followed by the number of kanji it applies to. From Old Japanese. First attested in the Kojiki of 712 CE.[1]

Analyzable as a compound of onomatopoeia すがすが (sugasuga, relaxing, refreshing) +‎ しい (-shii, adjectivizing suffix; gives the object the quality of the object attached to the suffix).

The kanji spelling is an example of jukujikun (熟字訓), originally meaning "clear" in Chinese.
