[edit]Compound of 横 (yoko, “sideways; horizontal”) + 笛 (fue, “flute”).[1][2] The fue changes to bue as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
Compare 縦笛 (tatebue), which refers to an end-blown flute held vertically.
