Compound of (kaku, grammatical case) +‎ 助詞 (joshi, grammatical particle).[1][2][3][4][5]

Coined by linguist 山田孝雄 (Yamada Yoshio) in his work 日本文法論 (Nihon Bunpō-ron, Treatise on Japanese Grammar), published starting in 1902.[1]
