Etymology
[edit]Phono-semantic matching, adapted from the earlier 尼池 (níchí) [1950s], a pure phonetic transcription from Tibetan ཉིང་ཁྲི (nying khri, the local name for Nyingchi). The renaming was influenced by 靈芝/灵芝 (língzhī), a specialty from the Nyingchi area.
Tibetan ཉིང་ཁྲི (nying khri) is a variant of ཉང་ཁྲི (nyang khri, “Nyingchi”), a name derived from ཉང (nyang, “a Tibetan clan living near the Nyang River (尼洋河)”) and ཁྲི (khri, “a Tibetan clan (living in the lower reaches of the Nyang River?)”) (Agui, 2012).
