Etymology

From 有り (ari, the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative”) and 終止形 (shūshikei, “terminal”) forms of classical verb 有り (ari), “to exist”) +‎ 明け (ake, the 未然形 (mizenkei, “incomplete”) and 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “continuative”) forms of classical verb 明く (aku), “to open → to dawn”). 1. the dawn, especially on the sixteenth day of the lunar month onwards
2. Short for 有明の月 (ariake no tsuki) the moon still in the sky on the ariake or hours from around dawn to early sunrise
