Etymology
[edit]文字 (“character”) + 揃え (“alignment”)
Noun
[edit]文字揃え or 文字揃え • (mojisoroe or mojizoroe)
Usage notes
[edit]文字揃え (mojisoroe) can simply be about typical alignments in Western typography such as "flush left/right" or "justify", but in Japanese typography, it can also be about aligning characters within their 仮想ボディ (kasō bodi, “em squares”) or 平均字面 (heikin jizura, “ideographic character faces”). For example, in a line with characters with different font size or advance width/height, the smaller characters can be aligned to the top/bottom/left/right side of the em squares or ICF squares of the largest characters.
