Etymology

Borrowing of Dutch Bengala (Bengal),[1][2][3][4] or of Portuguese Bengala (Bengal),[5] as both the cloth and the red iron oxide were imported from Bengal in the Edo period.[5][6]

Doublet of ベンガル (Bengaru, Bengal). The kanji spelling is an example of phonetic ateji (当て字).

First cited to a text from 1693.[5]
