Etymology
[edit]Superficially of 岩 (iwa, “stone”) + 梨 (nashi, “pear”); compare synonyms 岩椿 (iwatsubaki, literally “stone camellia”), 砂苺 (sunaichigo, literally “sand strawberry”). Attested from the 13th century.[1]
