Usage notes
[edit]Cantonese speakers from Singapore often continue to use 紅毛橋/红毛桥 (hung4 mou4 kiu4), since 紅/红 (hung4) and 宏 (wang4) are not homophones in Cantonese.
The same is true in Hokkien. In vernacular Mandarin, it is also common to write the original characters 紅毛橋/红毛桥 (Hóngmáoqiáo), whereas 宏茂橋/宏茂桥 (Hóngmàoqiáo) is more often found in official transcriptions, or when it is preferred to apply the more grand and auspicious meaning of those characters (such as in the names of local businesses).
