Etymology
[edit]Literally the “bridge standing towards heaven”.

- a sandbar in northern Kyoto overlooking the Sea of Japan
- 1124–27, Kin'yō Wakashū (book 9, poem 550), also Hyakunin Isshu, poem 60
- 大江山いく野の道の遠ければまだふみも見ず天の橋立
- Ōe-yama Ikuno no michi no tōkereba mada fumi mo mizu Amanohashidate
- Far away from Mount Ōe and the road of Ikuno (literally “go-field”), I have neither gone there nor seen any of her letters[―she might be in] the standing bridge of Heaven [Amanohashidate].
