[edit]Unknown. Perhaps from 蚊々 (kaga, “mosquitoes”) + の (no, possessive particle) + 母 (bo, “mother”) or 蚊々 + の + 姥 (uba, “granny”). The kanji, from 大 (“big”) + 蚊 (“mosquito”), are jukujikun (熟字訓).
