Etymology
[edit]- Cholon
- An Chi (2016) thinks that the form 堤岸 (meaning "embankment") arose from folk etymology; pointing to the variant form 提岸, he proposes that both transcribed a local toponym which also yielded Vietnamese Sài Gòn (whence Cantonese 西貢/西贡 (sai1 gung3)).[1] See Sài Gòn for further etymology.
