Glyph origin
[edit]Enclosures (囗) with components representing the idiom 四方八面 (sìfāngbāmiàn, “all around; in all directions”).
Etymology
[edit]From Mongolian ᠬᠦᠷᠢᠶᠡ (küriy-e, “enclosure; area”), whence Khalkha Mongolian хүрээ (xüree). Hence a variant of 庫倫/库伦 (kùlún).
Alternatively, as a disyllabic Jin derivative of 圈 (OC *kʰron, *ɡronʔ, *kʰon, *ɡlonʔ, *ɡlons, “circle”) which has preserved the lateral /*-l-/ in consonant clusters from Old Chinese (Qiao, 2008).
