Attested in the Book of Song as the Early Middle Chinese transcription 可寒 (kʰɑX ɦɑn), in the fragment 可寒 (*čʰo qaɣan, you khagan), and likely of Xianbei origin.[1] Cognate with Middle Mongol ᠬᠠᠭᠠᠨ (qaɣan).
