Etymology
[edit]First appears in the early 1200s, as a compound of 口 (kuchi, “mouth; an expression, a way of saying something”) + 付ける (tsukeru, “to stick something onto something else; to set something”).[1] The tsukeru changes to zukeru as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
Reappears in 1956, reanalyzed as a compound of 口 (kuchi, “mouth”) + 付ける (tsukeru, “to stick something onto something else”),[1] from a literal description of the act of pressing one's lips onto someone else.
