Etymology
[edit]From 遺教經 (The Sutra on the Buddha's Bequeathed Teachings, a Chinese translation; the original version in Sanskrit has been lost.):
Literal translation (kanbun kundoku) in Japanese:
世皆常無し、会えば必ず離る有り。
- Yo mina tsune nashi, aeba kanarazu hanaru ari.
- Everything about the world is impermanent. A meeting is always accompanied with a parting.
Proverb
[edit]- (Buddhism) those who meet must part (Every human relationship will end someday due to the transient nature of life.)
