From (わし) (washi, eagle) + (つか) (tsukami, clutching, (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb (つか) (tsukamu, to clutch).). The tsukami changes to zukami as an instance of rendaku (連濁).
