Japanese

Alternative spellings
滅茶滅茶
目茶目茶

Etymology

[edit]

Uncertain. Perhaps reduplication of 滅茶 (mecha), which may in turn come from a notion of tea ceremony as a means to quiet a disordered or unreasonable state,[1] or a shift from 無茶(むちゃ) (mucha) ("absurd"; superficially "without tea"). Alternately, it may be ideophonic, with sound-symbolic rather than referential origins; compare むちゃくちゃ (muchakucha), ぐちゃぐちゃ (guchagucha).
