忽ち
乍ち (uncommon)
儵ち (rare)

From Old Japanese. First cited to the Man'yōshū of 759.[1]

Apparently a shift from 立ち待ち (tachimachi, standing and waiting), the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, continuative or stem form) of compound verb 立ち待つ (tachimatsu, to wait while standing),[1][2][3] probably from the idea of being at the ready. In older texts, this was always followed by the adverbial particle (ni) for all senses.[1]
