Thought to be a shift from 嗅がし (kagashi, “smelling, sniffing”), itself from 嗅が (kaga, the 未然形 (mizenkei, “irrealis form”) of verb 嗅ぐ (kagu), “to smell, sniff”) + し (-shi, adjectival suffix).
