Thought to be a shift from 嗅がし (kagashi, smelling, sniffing), itself from 嗅が (kaga, the 未然形 (mizenkei, irrealis form) of verb 嗅ぐ (kagu), “to smell, sniff) +‎ (-shi, adjectival suffix).
