Pronunciation
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Compound of 御 (o-, honorific prefix) + 休み (yasumi, “rest, a break, a holiday”), the 連用形 (ren'yōkei, “stem form”) of verb 休む (yasumu, “to rest”), itself from adjective 安い (yasui, “easygoing; easy”) + verbalizing suffix む (mu).[3]
Noun
[edit]Etymology 2
[edit]Ultimately derived the same as above, but generally regarded as a shortening of the longer phrase お休みなさい (oyasumi nasai, “good night”).[3]
Interjection
[edit]- Short for お休みなさい (oyasumi nasai, “good night”).
