[edit]From Egyptian mktr, from a Semitic language. Compare Hebrew מִגְדָּל (miḡdāl), Ugaritic 𐎎𐎂𐎄𐎍 (mgdl /magdalu/), and Arabic مَجْدَل (majdal). Ultimately from Proto-West Semitic *magdal- (“tower”).
