ῥέπω

Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Uncertain. According to Pokorny, from Proto-Indo-European *werb- (“to bend, turn”), and traditionally compared with English wrap, but this is phonetically impossible. Connections to ῥᾰ́πτω (rháptō, “to sew”) (with a supposed common denominator meaning of "to twist together") are not certain.[1] Lithuanian ver̃pti (“to spin”), another traditional comparandum, is likely not cognate; see ῥᾰ́πτω (rháptō) for discussion.
