[edit]From Proto-Indo-European *werp- (“to spin, rake”). Cognate with Latvian vērpt (“to spin”), Old Prussian etwiērpt (“to forgive”), powiērpt (“to leave”), Old Church Slavonic вьрпсти (vĭrpsti, “to pluck, tear off, rake”), Hittite [script needed] (warp-ᶻᶦ, “to wash, bathe, rub”). The traditionally compared Ancient Greek ῥᾰ́πτω (rháptō, “to sew together, stitch”) is likely not cognate.[1]
