ῥάκος
Appearance
Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Clear morphological cognates lacking outside Greek. The traditional comparison with Sanskrit वृश्चति (vṛścati, “to hew, cleave”) is not accepted by Beekes. A connection with Proto-Indo-Iranian *wr̥ćšás (“tree”) is highly uncertain. The word could well be Pre-Greek.
