[edit]Etymology
[edit]The word has hesitantly been connected to ὕδωρ (húdōr, “water”) as "juicy", to ὕω (húō, “to rain”) as "rain plant" and to ὗς (hûs, “swine”) as "sow-bread". In view of the alternative forms, Beekes argues for a Pre-Greek word and links it with ἴτον (íton, “kind of mushroom”).
