Etymology

The connection with ὄψομαι (ópsomai), which is from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ekʷ- (“to see”), can hardly be rejected. This implies an older meaning "sight, look, glance", whence the meanings "awe, veneration" and "vengeance, punishment".
