Etymology

Probably from Ἰβηρία (Ibēría, Iberia) +‎ -ίς (-ís), after its native environment. Alessio thinks the name is Aegean and compares the word with ἰβίσκος (ibískos, ibiscus) and ἰβάνη (ibánē, water-bucket).
