[edit]Seems to be from ἐν (en, “in, at”) + Proto-Indo-European *gew- (“hand; to curve”) (whence γυῖον (guîon, “hand”), ἐγγῠ́η (engŭ́ē, “pledge, security”)), thus meaning "at hand (i.e. nearby)".[1]
