Etymology
[edit]Disputed. Often said to be from Ἀκάδημος (Akádēmos) (also Ἑκάδημος (Hekádēmos)), an Athenian hero and original estate-holder of the site + -ία (-ía). The name is also said to mean "silent district;" see ἀκή (akḗ, “silence”) + δῆμος (dêmos, “district”).
