Etymology

From Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-, zero-grade of *sem- (“one”). The second part is obscure, but the word may be some syncope of *ἁ-πακυς, from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-pn̥kʷu- (“(lit.) all-one”). See Latin cūnctus.
