ἄρκυς

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Ancient Greek

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Accoridng to Lidén, related to ἄρκευθος (árkeuthos), ἀρκάνη (arkánē) and Russian раки́та (rakíta, willow) but Beekes finds this improbable, as a derivative suffix would be expected. According to him, it is more probable a Pre-Greek word, giving the technical nature of the term.

Pronunciation

[edit]

Mark the vowel length of the ambiguous vowels and υ by adding a macron after each one if it is long, or a breve if it is short. By default, Module:grc-pronunciation assumes it is short if unmarked.
