ἄδδαι

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Ancient Macedonian

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Unknown. Apparently equivalent to Ancient Greek ῥυμοί (rhumoí), according to Hesychius of Alexandria.

Witczak (1995) conciders it a cognate of Ancient Greek ὄζος (ózos, branch), with -δδ- used to respresent (the reflex of) *-zd-. [1] If this comparison is correct, from Proto-Indo-European *h₃ósdos.

Noun

[edit]

ἄδδαι (áddai) (plural)

  1. (hapax) poles

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Only attested as a hapax in Hesychius:
    • 5th century CE, Hesychius Alexandreus, Συναγωγὴ Πασῶν Λέξεων κατὰ Στοιχεῖον Α:
      ἄδδαι· ῥυμοί, ὑπὸ Μακεδόνων
      áddai; rhumoí, hupò Makedónōn
      addai: poles, among the Macedonians
