Etymology

This verb is generally reconstructed as *ἀϝερτάω (*awertáō), from ἀείρω (aeírō, to bind, hang), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂wer- (to raise; to bind), but the derivation is unusual. See also ἀρτήρ (artḗr) and ἀρτηρία (artēría, artery; windpipe).[1]
