Ancient Greek
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Not related to ὄφελος (óphelos, “use”). According to Beekes, probably connected to ἀπαφεῖν (apapheîn) aorist b of verb ἀπαφίσκω (apaphískō, “I deceive”) (itself probably from Pre-Greek/substrate), in which case the word originally meant "deceiving".
