Etymology

[edit]

From ṯb (calf) +‎ nṯr (god) in a direct genitive construction, thus literally ‘calf of the god’. The written form demonstrates honorific transposition. The Akkadian and Greek spellings may reflect a form ṯb n nṯr, with an analytic genitive.
