From Old Javanese bhūpati (“king”), from Sanskrit भूपति (bhūpati) < भूमिपति (bhūmipati), compound of भूमि (bhūmi, “land”) +‎ पति (pati, “lord”). Cognate of Indonesian bupati, Javanese ꦧꦸꦥꦠꦶ (bupati).
