Etymology

From Proto-Mon-Khmer *phuuj ~ *phuəj ~ *pʔuuj (“blanket”); cognate with Northern Khmer พูํย. Also compare Thai ผวย (pǔai).

Pou and Jenner (1973) connects this term to Teochew 被 (pʰue³⁵, “blanket”) but they are most likely look-alikes.
