From Proto-Mon-Khmer *ɟplaʔ, an infixed form of *ɟlaʔ (“thorn”); cognate with Bahnar jơla and Old Mon jirla (“thorn”) (modern Mon ဓလ (həlɛ̀ˀ, “thorn”).
