From Proto-Mon-Khmer *koŋ (to bend, to be bent). Cognate with Thai ก่ง (gòng), ก้งโค้ง, โกง (goong), โก่ง (gòong), โก้งโค้ง, โค้ง (kóong). Doublet of កោង (kaong).
