Dative of *ᚹᛟᛞᚢᚱᛁᛞᚨᛉ (*woduridaʀ /⁠Wōdurīdaʀ⁠/). Compound of *ᚹᛟᛞᚢᛉ (*woduʀ /⁠wōduʀ⁠/, “fury”) +‎ *ᚱᛁᛞᚨᛉ (*ridaʀ /⁠rīdaʀ⁠/, “rider”). First element from Proto-Germanic *wōduz. Second element ultimately from Proto-Germanic *rīdaną (“to ride”).

The a-stem dative singular -ᛖ (-e /⁠-ē⁠/) comes from Proto-Germanic *-ai, with regular Northwest Germanic sound shift of *-ai > -ē (> Old Norse -i).
