[edit]*ᚨᛁᚦᚨᛉ (*aiþaʀ, “oath”) + *ᛚᚨᛏᚨᛉ (*lataʀ /lātaʀ/, “reciter”). Second element an a-stem agent noun derived from Proto-Germanic *lētaną (“to let allow; leave (behind)”), but apparently carrying the sense “to make sound, to speak”, as found in later Old Norse láta. For the formation compare ᚹᛟᛞᚢᚱᛁᛞᛖ (woduride /Wōdurīdē/).
