From Proto-Inuit *aʀnaq, from Proto-Eskimo *aʀnaʀ. Cognate with Greenlandic arnaq, Inupiaq aġnaq and Nunatsiavummiutut annak. Possibly attested as early as 1577 in the name Egnock or Ignorth.
