[edit]From Ottoman Turkish خاتون (hātun, “lady; noblewoman”), itself from Persian خاتون (xātūn, “lady; noblewoman”), from Sogdian 𐼶𐼴𐽂𐼰𐼷𐼻𐼳 (γwtʾynh /xwatēn, xutēn/, “queen”). Ultimately from Proto-Iranian *hwatā́wniH, a feminine form of Proto-Iranian *hwatā́wā.
