Etymology

Uncertain, either inherited from Proto-Kartvelian or borrowed from Mingrelian ჭიჭონი (č̣ič̣oni), an alternative form of ზიჭონი (zič̣oni), which see for more.

For insertion of -დ (-d) in plant names ending in -ნ- (-n-), compare: ბაგუ̂ი̄ნდ (bagûīnd, goat-willow), ბარყუ̂ენდ (barq̇ûend, cherry plum), გოგლა̈ნდ (gogländ, mountain ash), უ̂ოფლა̈ნდ (ûopländ, gooseberry).
