[edit]Uncertain, either inherited from Proto-Kartvelian or borrowed from Mingrelian ჭიჭონი (č̣ič̣oni), an alternative form of ზიჭონი (zič̣oni), which see for more.
For insertion of -დ (-d) in plant names ending in -ნ- (-n-), compare: ბაგუ̂ი̄ნდ (bagûīnd, “goat-willow”), ბარყუ̂ენდ (barq̇ûend, “cherry plum”), გოგლა̈ნდ (gogländ, “mountain ash”), უ̂ოფლა̈ნდ (ûopländ, “gooseberry”).
