Etymology

From Proto-Kartvelian *pakl-. Cognate with Old Georgian ფა(ნ)ქლი (pa(n)kli, mange, boil) and Svan ფაქა̈რ (pakär, pus, sore, ulcer).[1][2] Typologically, compare Old Armenian ծաղիկ (całik), Proto-Turkic *čeček, Mandarin 天花 (tiānhuā) and Latin variola for the sense development.
