From Proto-Georgian-Zan *niḳel- (snout). Cognate with Old Georgian ნიკელი (niḳeli, snout, lip) and Mingrelian ნიკუ (niḳu), ნუკუ (nuḳu), ნჷკჷ (nəḳə, chin).
