[edit]From ი- (i-) + ბირ- (bir-, “to play; sing”) + -ს (-s). Inherited from Proto-Kartvelian *br- (“to sing”), cognate with Mingrelian ბირ-აფა (bir-apa) and Svan ლი-ბრ-ჲალ-ი (li-br-yal-i).
