Borrowed from Byzantine Greek ἐσχάτη (eskhátē), the feminine of ἔσχατος (éskhatos, “final, last”).

ესკატი • (esǩaťi) (Latin spelling esǩaťi)

the money for burying the deceased, which was collected and kept by the old people in advance
(Atina) the unclaimed and worthless thing left behind by a dead person, wreck, ruin

The cross was removed (the Christian cross of blessing was removed from tradition). And took the wine with it.
